And youвЂ™ll learn how to manipulate people into doing your bidding, by utilizing an extortion system somewhat like the one in THQвЂ™s The Punisher. EA has smartly tacked on a free-aim modification, enabling players to aim at anything at any time. YouвЂ™ll grapple with the shooting system, a version of James Bond Everything or NothingвЂ™s targeting system, which sees your character locking on to tagged enemies and vehicles. YouвЂ™ll learn how to use the fighting system, a simplified Fight Night system based around the analog sticks. It starts out linearly, with an internal training section guiding players with a kind hand. Like GTA, The Godfather is based on an open-design world with well-populated parts of towns, traffic, fully jack-able cars and more.

The carried-over Tiger Woods Game Face tool, or Mobface as EA likes to call it, is whittled down from its former depth, but itвЂ™s still got some depth and it will work on you. YouвЂ™ll get a little chill when your character interacts with the cast of The Godfather, Sonny Corleone, Clemenza, Tom Hagen, and especially Don Corleone. If youвЂ™re a white male of any sort, then the create-a-player tool (which only allows for the creation of Italian-American males), will play weird perceptual tricks on you. Creating your own character and inserting it into the game has its own special, uncanny feeling to it. There are, however, some impressive narrative moments.

The original PC game Mafia does a far superior job of capturing the essence and vibe of The Godfather than EAвЂ™s The Godfather.

There are several times when the game tries to re-create pivotal moments in the movie and it fails. When special, moving scenes are re-created, the game doesnвЂ™t deliver the same flair, style or feel from the movie. Later on - because the gameвЂ™s length ranges from 12-50 hours depending on how you play - The Godfather completely loses the flow of the movie. The areas where it shines most are in the beginning, when you hear the theme song slowly evolving and you attend the traditional Sicilian wedding. Re-creating The Godfather in all its cinematic brilliance is an almost impossible job to do in a videogame, and EAвЂ™s finished product conveys just how vastly different the medium of videogames is from movies. EA made a bunch of nice additions to the Mobface tool, including a better interface and more clothes, hats and items to distinguish your character. The self-shadowing is adequate, while the facial damage looks more like your character just slept in a pig trough or smeared his face with Nutella than suffering actual facial injury. Simple stuff, really, but it adds a little touch. YouвЂ™ll drive down the street, see lighting flash across the sky, hear thunder a few seconds later, and then rain will come pouring down. Of these, the explosions are freaking radical (blow up a car with a few Molotov Cocktails and youвЂ™ll see) and the weather is likeable. These include outrageously cool new fire explosions, enhanced particle effects and facial texture maps on key characters, a cleaned-up map, dynamic weather, self-shadowing, and persistent face damage. Visually, The Godfather wonвЂ™t garner any medals from the Annual Graphics Tart Critic Awards, but there are some standout qualities. These additions bring the game up to par with next-gen Xbox 360 titles, but they donвЂ™t push the game into any unexplored territory. There are other minor additions, but these are the most substantial ones. The 360 version now packs new special visual effects, additional missions, tweaked AI, Xbox Live leaderboards and Achievements, and most significantly, hirable crew members. If you played the current-gen version, this plays exactly the same as the first game, but every so often youвЂ™ll see or experience a surprising little tweak. Like many Electronic Arts games initially published on current gen consoles, The Godfather is essentially the same game with minor visual and gameplay upgrades. Enhanced, tweaked and improved, EAвЂ™s open-world mob game remains essentially the same. The Xbox 360 version is essentially the same game as the current-gen version with cranked up visuals, better tuned and additional levels, and a higher-grade presentation. EA has the hubris, the money, and the people to enter and contend, and when the game shipped this past March, it fared pretty well, scoring a press average of 8.1 out of 10. Most companies that have tried in this area have done OK or done poorly. To make both a great videogame version of the movie and to contend with three increasingly deeper, larger, and more sophisticated versions of GTA - and now the surprisingly popular Saints Row - is not an easy task.
